Dr. Sarat Chandra Misra’s journey is an inspiring story of passion, exploration, and scientific dedication. From the forests of Koraput to becoming one of India’s most respected Orchidologists, his life reflects extraordinary commitment towards biodiversity and conservation.
His first love towards Orchids
Born in rural Odisha to a modest family, Dr. Misra spent his early years in and around Berhampur, developing a deep connection with nature.
He completed his BSc. Engineering from UCE Burla in 1963 and joined the Odisha State Government as an Assistant Engineer.
During his posting in Koraput in 1964, his fascination with Orchids began — a curiosity that transformed into lifelong research.
In 1996, Utkal University honored him with Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) for his extraordinary contribution to Botany.
What started as a simple admiration for Orchids evolved into a six-decade mission of scientific exploration, conservation, and preservation of India’s floral heritage.
